GINA TAN

With a keen sense for storytelling, Gina directed the provocative documentary, “Transit,” about a Muslim transvestite’s inner struggle both with his identity and with his mother. “Transit” was awarded the Best Documentary at the prestigious Cecil Awards at Chapman University (USA) and won the Bronze at the Singapore Crowbar Awards. “Transit” was also nominated for the prestigious David Wolper Award for Student Documentary from the International Documentary Association (IDA). Another short film directed by Gina is “Filial Haven” was accepted for the Cannes Short Film Corner.

After graduation, Gina worked her way up as a freelance 1st Assistant Director for features, commercials as well as television series. She also completed directing 4 episodes of “The Munah & Hirzi show,” featuring the comedy team that have fast become two of the top Singaporean YouTube stars. In 2015, she produced “The Drum” which was in competition at the 2017 Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France, the largest international film festival dedicated to short films. The film also won the 2018 Viddsee Juree Gold Awards. In 2018, inspired by a true story, she wrote and directed (笔芯) “Pencil”. The film won Best Film and Best Screenplay in the Open Category at the National Youth Film Awards 2018. Most recently, Pencil won the Grand Prize for short film in the 7th Seoul Guro International Kids Film Festival. The film was also a semi finalist at Utah Film Festival 2019 awards and an official selections for Cleveland International Film Festival, Dances with Films, The Seoul Guro International Kids Film Festival, Twister Alley Film Festival and more recently, the film traveled to Taiwan Golden Harvest Festival for a Special Screening. The film is currently traveling the festival circuit.

Her experience with different genres has proven her to be a versatile director with a sharp sensibility. She is currently working on another short film, Gender X, a LGBT film surrounding technology.
